Lost
Jan 30and I shed tears. to musical notes. until they became words. blazing behind my eyes. gone was comprehension. while the afterlife awaits? death walks astray. sunny days turn meek. but the curls didn't want to go away. fading the unblemished marks between my legs. is the cure of many restless days

Practice Practice Practice
Jan 30She said she couldn’t draw For years, she’d try But with the pages smudged The charcoal lines not in her control She’d crumple the pages Toss them aside After so long, she gave up Failure haunting her and Scaring the art away The world was a little grayer When her heart decided to Just stop trying One day, without thought She started to doodle No thoughts, no fears Just a pen making swirls On a white page Days in an days out She walked away and When she came back Surprise coursed through Her warm blood The work was beautiful Pride and glee danced Shimmied and giggled in her heart As she finally appreciated The practice, the art of practice

Religion vs. Atheism
Jan 30This piece is risky to write for several reasons, but I just need to say it: Muslims are not on the Earth to kill non-Muslims. It seems to be hard for people to understand this very basic truth. I will also admit yes, there are people who call themselves Muslim and in fact kill people. They are not the majority. What has prompted this from me, you are definitely wondering. Well, Twitter. I saw someone I follow Tweet: caveheraa on twitter mentioning Uyghur Muslims in response to a tweet claiming atheists don't lynch or kill for their lack of beliefsI read @caveheraa's tweet, and though I agreed with the sentiment, I decided to look at what @vanish_forever was saying too, so I opened up their tweet and saw: user tweeting that atheists don't lynch or kill in response to someone sharing atheists should shut up about religionNow that you've seen the tweets that have kindled something in my soul, let's talk about them. What's happening to Uyghur Muslims is disgusting and horrendous, and I could write a whole book addressing it, but if you don't know what is happening to them, you can click here. The Chinese government claims state atheism, and they are totally okay with the annihilation of a specific group of people with a "different" religion. If we break down why it's happening and what China is doing to the Uyghur Muslims, it's essentially forcing their religion–or lack thereof–on these Muslims. When we talk about ISIS or other terrorist organizations that claim they are doing the work of Islam, the Western world is infuriated when they kill non-Muslims (as they should be), but when it's Muslims on the wrong end of terrorism, everyone wants to use excuses. What do I mean? Organizations like ISIS and governments like China are killing people. When people say they want to have stricter regulations to stop organizations like ISIS, I'm all for it, except usually those stricter regulations just mean officials and officers being meaner to me than a non-Muslim standing behind me. We need to learn how to tackle terrorism in all its forms–Muslim, White supremacy, and Atheist. It's high time we stop kidding ourselves that no religion is the solution. You'd be offended if I demanded you convert to Islam in the name of peace, so you shouldn't be surprised when I'm offended that you want me to be an atheist in the name of peace. However, if you are an atheist and you want to be my neighbor, borrow some salt and talk about the weather, I'm totally down for that, and I'd hope you'd be down for that too. I'm so tired of people acting like violent behavior is due to religion. I don't know actual stats on this, but from what I do know, almost all religions I've heard about preach peace and respect. Even Atheists I know follow a general “goodness” moral compass. At the end of the day, humans are the problem. We are so focused on our own pride and ego that if things don't fit our way, we turn to violence and anger. It's part of our human nature, unfortunately, and personally, my religion is what helps me stay centered. We all need to focus on finding what centers ourselves instead of enforcing rules on each other.

That One Night They Didn’t Know I Was Home
Jan 30Folding laundry on a night unnamed I hum the words, you're the sunflower Even with the song blasting, giggling girls speak blurred words: Annoying, bossy, Wonder how to get her to chill Too much work Needy and fake. Unknown are the intentions. Tearducts remain dry. Hand wavers, the shirt crumples. I have to start over. Fear of never truly knowing the enemies among my peers, sets in deep into my bloodstream I drown them out with the same song I’m my own sunflower

That Was The Verse
Jan 30They fill your heart with apologies Every time you cry foul Saying they are too old to change You beg to no avail But their bruises of the past refuse to fade Minds half out the door Souls regretful and wanting A life that can never be theirs Everyone loves to wish As if a star will make a new You'll try to do better But find your parents’ reflection staring back at you P.S. This poem is in "response" to This Be The Verse by Philip Larkin. It's a poem I have enjoyed reading over a hundred times and I WISH I could remember which poet said to read a line and then write your own in response. I think it was Safia Elhillo. My memory is failing me here, I’m sorry.

#BlackVoicesMatter
Jan 30There is no way to live without breath– Let us breathe– Let us breathe into this world with our words With our art With our logic With our smiles With our grit With our hard-earned EXISTENCE Existing is resisting only because you want us to disappear but reap the rewards of Our sweat and blood Tears are my reminder I am human, no matter your hate and ignorance I'm tired all day Everyday A human's life should never be up for debate On whether they are worthy of equality. Criminals we question–but who decides the criminal? Who calls out the criminal When they have so much power? If our protectors are our killers We must be our own savior Bblue lives is a lifestyle Black lives are people existing To be Bblue, you choose to work from, for, inside, beside, behind a b r o k e n system– Regardless of your intentions To be Black one is born With a little extra melanin In their blood, and a world ready to stack cards against them There is no choice Nor shame in being Black With a proud B But yes, I see your shame even behind your "Blue Lives Matter" poster, behind your silence and deflections We know you chose to hate, you chose fear
